The Bright Child – The Novel That Wasn’t

the_bright_child_-_large
So, once upon a time, I decided to write a fantasy novel to be podcasted weekly on a site called www.podiobooks.com. I got about a third of the way through and decided to stop, because it was the worst thing I’d ever written in my life. Worst. Ever. In my life. But once I dropped it, the nightmare truly began. Here’s the argument over my shirking of responsibility that began on the discussion page for the novel. I still occasionally get friendly or hateful messages on MySpace, asking me when I’m going to finish. To answer you all: probably never. Sorry. Honestly.

Weirdly, though podiobooks took the book down when I stopped posting new chapters, other sites that grabbed it under the Creative Commons License have kept it up. So if you’d like to hear the worst, most derivative genre fiction you’ve ever experienced, go here.

  1. When someone ask when are you going to finish THE BRIGHT CHILD, invite them to
    do so.

  2. Hey Chris,

Believe it or not, I’ve actually been dipping my toes back into the water of the book, and may finish one of these days. I’ll keep you all updated.

P.S. And any story ideas are welcome!

  3. I too enjoyed what you have done on The Bright Child. That’s why I look you up online about twice a year to see if any progress has been made. At least now I know you are thinking about finishing it.
Let me tell you about myself. I’m 38 years old and I’m not a very strong reader but I try. That is the reason I love podiobooks.com. I support great authors like Scott Sigler and J.C. Hutchins by pre-ordering their books when they become available. These books for a very slow reader like me are very intimidating. I would never have bought the books had I not already heard their greatness. This is a greatness I believe your story shares. I would be proud to have your book in my collection.
I also have a son who is 13 now. I try to stress the importance of reading to him and he also looked weekly for the next podcast. I hope you’ll add my email address to contacts to keep us updated.

    Thanks for the hard work!

  4. I have to say I really enjoyed your story and was wondering when you would finish it. I have kept your feed in my subscription list, hoping some day you would finish. I just finished The Dan Brown book and can honestly say I liked yours better (except that it is not finished). If you don’t know where you are going with it, consider just posting the outline and we can fill it in for you.
